The exponential growth of IoT (Internet of Things) is closely related to how technology has addressed many unanswered questions regarding security, reliability and user-friendly solutions. Along with these three “must have” elements, IoT technology evolves with mobility, transforming it into the arrowhead of the Digital Revolution.
A device with the capacity to navigate between networks located in-country or offshore is the key success factor of any IoT M2M (Machine to Machine) ecosystem. Examples of such of devices can be seen in:
- Connected Cars: crossing two or three borders in one week in Europe;
- Connected devices in the healthcare industry: receiving vital monitoring data from any location around the globe;
- Live HD video transmission: using a smart network in international journalism.
A SIM card allows you to gain the necessary connectivity between your device and the host network. However, every time your device needs to transition between different networks, in most cases, the user needs to switch the SIM card or even pay a very expensive international roaming data plan which will not necessarily assure good coverage or network performance.
Nowadays, eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card) and/or Multi IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) provides the capacity to have a single embedded SIM card allowing you to get the best or most convenient network based on coverage or pricing.
Below are three options as to how you can face mobility IoT challenges:
1) eUICC: This option acts as a “container” of multiple SIM profiles, meaning one SIM card can hold several network accesses in-country or out of country, at the same time. As an eUICC user you can select (manually or automatically) the best network option for you.
Advantages of eUICC include:
- Guaranteed up-time and performance by selecting the best available network without having to remove the SIM card from the device.
- Data pricing, bandwidth, and coverage can be negotiated with MNO (Mobile Network Operator).
- Ability to remotely add or “provision” the SIM profile Over the Air (OTA).
- GSMA functionality and security standards.
- Ability to change the subscription manager provider at any time.
2) Multi-IMSI: When a GSM connected device powers on, this device will perform an authentication procedure within the network. IMSI is the key for the network’s authentication. Essentially, a SIM card with Multi-IMSI provides the capacity to remotely (manually or automatically) change the SIM’s subscription, procuring the best performance network, pricing agreement or International coverage without the necessity to switch the SIM card which holds the selected IMSI (Multi-IMSI).
Advantages of Multi-IMSI include:
- Optimize coverage and performance by selecting the best available network without having to remove the SIM from the device.
- Using a MNO/MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) roaming agreement, you can guarantee previously negotiated data pricing, bandwidth, and coverage.
- Ability to remotely add or “provision” SIM profiles/subscriptions Over the Air.
- Easy to implement.
- Several subscriptions can be stored in the SIM card automating the subscription change process.
3) eUICC+Multi-IMSI: With this option, the user has access to multiple profiles and therefore has the ability to switch between network infrastructures automatically. Because you can count multiple profiles in your eUICC, your device can utilize the Multi-IMSI capacity by selecting the best available network acting as a single operator.
Advantages of eUICC+Multi-IMSI include:
- Optimize coverage and performance by selecting the best available network without having to remove the SIM from the device.
- Data pricing, bandwidth, and coverage can be negotiated with MNO.
- Ability to remotely add or “provision” SIM profiles/subscriptions Over the Air.
- Several subscriptions can be stored in the SIM card automating the subscription change process.
Change the subscription manager provider at any time.
